The Fabric We Used in the VLES designs GO-bag
When we set out to design our go-bag we knew we needed totally water proof fabric and one that was seriously tough. The challenge was to get that in a fabric that didn't scream "survivor" since it was important to build a bag that didn't draw unwanted attention. We wanted the VLES GO-bag to look and feel like a simple, well made and understated piece of luggage. Little should anyone know what features lurked beneath the banal exterior (a full backpack, flashlight holder, reflective tape, emergency whistle, tether, wheels, bug out module, money belt, etc.) nor should they have an inclination of what was stocked within.
There are measurements used in the fabric industry to objectively quantify strength and waterproof characteristics. Our fabric has a tensile strength of 364 pounds and a waterproof rating of 15,000 mm which means the fabric is intensely strong, waterproof and rainproof. The three interior modules are made of the same fabric and, since we pack our supplies in clear pvc kits, there's a third level of waterproof-ability. We can't claim our go-bag is 100% waterproof, but it's pretty darn close.
